Commissioner Arrington to Host “Color of Comics: Behind the Black Panther” | Print |

District 5 Commissioner Marvin S. Arrington, Jr. and the Auburn Avenue Branch of the Fulton County Library System will host a daylong celebration of comic books and efforts to reflect diversity in this art form. The event, Color of Comics: Behind the Black Panther, is scheduled to include panel discussions and exhibitors. The free event, which is open to the public, happens Saturday, August 31st from 10 am to 5 pm at the Auburn Avenue African American Research Library, 101 Auburn Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30303.

“The Academy Award nominated film Black Panther was applauded for many technical achievements, but most importantly, it represented a high watermark for the depiction of people of color in the arts,” says Fulton County District 5 Commissioner Marvin S. Arrington, Jr. “This event celebrates that work, the comics that proceeded it, and those who are still working to reflect diversity in the arts.”

The Color of Comics will honor the late great Marvel Artist, Billy Graham, who was the first African American to draw both the Black Panther and Luke Cage characters for Marvel in the 1970’s. Those scheduled to appear include professors from Morehouse College’s Cinema Studies and   Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recording artist Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of the legendary rap group Run-DMC, who is now involved in creating comics. Also scheduled to appear are Don McGregor, the original writer of the Black Panther comic series, and Alex Simmons, who worked on a recent book about the Black Panther comic.
